You don’t have to be a professional gardener to know that planting a new garden in the middle of summer is risky. The heat is brutal for people and young plants! Campers braved the July heat to install this beautiful pollinator garden and you will be rewarded when you visit (in person or virtually through this website) one month later to see the plants growing strong- building roots, climbing, and blooming.
You can’t help but smile when you see these ‘cheerful’ sunflowers!
The bee balm is blooming and the cardinal climber vine is growing gangbusters up the arch and dinghy mast.
The asters and goldenrod are ready to burst into bloom for beautiful purple and yellow late summer color and nectar.
Some welcome visitors have even been spotted, such as this caterpillar of the Eastern swallowtail butterfly – actually on the butterflyweed!
Please notice the signs that now welcome the community to the garden. OKC earned the ‘Pollinator Habitat’ sign by registering with the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge (http://pollinator.org/mpgcmap/index.html). A second sign reminds visitors that OKC built the garden, highlights important garden elements, and how to find more information online.
Stop by and enjoy the garden and garden art for yourself! Check back for more updates and plans for putting this garden ‘to bed’ for winter.
