7 awesome Nature campers, 3 counselors, and one instructor (Leslie) bravely kicked off the OKC pollinator garden project on the first day of camp!

Campers visited the prepped garden site at OCC to discuss general plans for the first phase of the garden installation, as well as review pollination and identify some pollinator-friendly plants.

Campers then participated in a Pollinator Scavenger Hunt and Bio-Blitz biking to several locations around Oxford including the home of Sarah Ramsey and Bob Kelly, the roadside garden on Mill Street, and the garden at Cutts & Case.

The bingo card-esque  scavenger hunt highlighted the different sizes, shapes, colors (and smells!) of pollinator-friendly plants.  The bio-blitz challenged campers to observe, identify, and count pollinators in a specific location and note what types & color flowers they are visiting.  During our stops around town campers also learned about different kinds of pollinators (even lemurs!), why pollination is vital to human life on Earth (e.g. food and products people depend on), factors contributing to the decline of pollinators, and what people can do to help.
